It's that time of year again - when a lot of us loosen our belts and prepare for an overindulgence of comfort foods and sweet treats.

It may seem impossible, but you can survive the holidays without packing on a few extra pounds.

We know that just the thought of a Thanksgiving feast is enough to make your mouth water.

Registered dietician Valerie Edwards says can be bad if it goes way beyond that.

"It's not the one day that's the problem," she said.

"For a lot of people, it just becomes two months of overeating and that's where the problems occur with weight gain."

Edwards says you should save those extra calories for special days and for foods you really love. And don't forget to exercise, even if your family is in town.

Personal trainer Danielle Norwood says there are easy exercises you can sneak in, even while cooking, to keep your metabolism up - exercises that will get your stomach ready for the feast.

Get creative- use a pumpkin or canned food as weights. Grab paper plates, and use them as gliders.

The other thing that can boost your calorie count is drinks.

Keep those averages in mind when filling your glass. A 5 oz glass of white wine is 120 calories - a similar glass of red will run you 130. A 12 oz beer is 150 calories.

And it's not just the alcohol - peppermint hot chocolate is 300 calories. Eggnog is 345, without rum. Add 75 calories if you go that route.
