Fight at family barbeque leaves father in critical condition

An Albuquerque man has been charged in connection with a fight at a family barbeque Monday that has his father fighting for his life.

Andrew Coppler has been booked on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a household member resulting in great bodily harm.

The charges followed his involvement in a fight at a family barbeque Monday evening at 3706 12th St NW.

Police tell us that Coppler got into a physical fight with his father, Keith “Joe” Coppler while they were drinking alcohol and having a barbeque.

The father and son got into an argument that turned violent.

Andrew Coppler slashed at his father with a steak knife, inflicting superficial wounds on Keith’s hand and neck.

Keith Coppler also reportedly attacked Andrew Coppler with a machete by swinging it at his son during the altercation.

The fight ended when Andrew Coppler reportedly choked his father by cutting off his airway and causing him to lose consciousness.

Police originally told us the elder Coppler died.

However, Keith Coppler was transported to UNMH where he is on life support and in critical condition as a result of his injuries.
