Police ID suspected car thief hit by police car

A driver crashed into an unoccupied Albuquerque police car at Smith's grocery store Friday morning.

That driver, who police identified as Matthew McClellan, 20, crashed into another car, ran away and was later hit by a different police car.

No one was seriously injured in the series of incidents.

The call began when an officer was sent to the Smith's store at Tramway and Central at about 9:30 a.m. to investigate a suspicious vehicle driven by McClellan.

The officer tried to make contact with McClellan. The officer left his car when the suspicious vehicle sped away, crashing into the officer's unoccupied vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene and crashed into another car.

McClellan ran and a search was conducted in the area.

While searching the area, an officer was driving on Rachel SE when McClellan suddenly ran out from a residential yard directly into the path of the officer.

The officer hit McClellan.

He was not seriously injured, but was transported to UNMH for observation.

Officers were able to determine the vehicle McClellan was driving had recently been reported stolen.

According to police, narcotics were also found in the car.
