Be safe with Christmas lights

By now most people are putting up holiday lights or at least thinking about it. If you are doing it yourself we have the information to make you safe and save you money.
"National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" has been warning us for years about holiday light safety using Clark Griswold as the hapless victim in comedic shenanigans and goings-on.
"You know working on a roof is always a little bit tricky," said Red Shovel Landscape owner, Kenny Grebe.
If you're unlucky like Clark Griswold - don't bother. But if you're like everyone else, it comes down to classic ladder safety, making sure you're on level, solid ground with a spotter if possible.
Local landscaping expert Kenny Grebe talks electrical safety.
"You can always have a bulb that might have popped out - well as soon as you plug that in, it's live so that live wire can start a fire, it can certainly shock you," said Grebe.
On the one hand, safety is first and foremost but on the other hand, if you're not looking for energy efficient lighting you may just be throwing money out the window.
Even though regular incandescent bulbs may look small, they eat a lot of power.
You have lots of options with energy saving timers and low energy LED bulbs.
"It saves us about 90 percent on our energy bill at the end of the season so it uses 10 percent of the power and it's very bright," said Grebe.
Those LED's are especially helpful if you want your home to light up the entire neighborhood - of course as safely as possible.
