LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces city officials say a drop box used to collect utility payments will be out of commission indefinitely thanks to a feces-wielding vandal.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the box was covered in dark plastic and yellow caution tape after city employees discovered Monday morning that it had been damaged and a foul odor was coming from it.

City officials say it appears someone defecated in the box over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Citing the potential bio-hazard, City Treasurer Robert Scaling says the payments inside have been voided. Customers who dropped payments in the box between Nov. 21 and Monday are being asked to make replacement payments.

Staff members collect payments from the box every day city government is open for business. Typically, between 50 and 100 payments are deposited in the box every day.
