County exempts animal research lab from ordinance

Bernalillo County commissioners approved a controversial amendment Tuesday evening to the animal cruelty ordinance, exempting a medical research lab.
Lovelace Respiratory Research Group uses animals as test subjects. Lovelace had said that without an exemption, it would have to go elsewhere and take hundreds of jobs with it.
The amendment had drawn strong opposition from animal rights activists.
