Watch out for critters in your Christmas tree

With Christmas quickly approaching, many people are searching for the perfect tree.
But sometimes there's more to the tree than meets the eye.
We found out what's hiding inside that tree and it could make your skin crawl. Tree insects could be an unexpected gift under your tree this year.
"It could potentially be somewhat of a nightmare," said Ray Park, of Ray's Christmas Tree Lot in Naples, Florida.
Tree insects can include gypsy moths, aphids and spider mites.
"If those are in the house, they could hatch out and be a problem," Park explained. "They'll maybe go into the carpet, furniture, stuff like that." But he says buyers can help prevent that by following a few guidelines.
"Get you're trees from a reliable source, someone who has their gypsy moth permit. That'll let you know if there are any bugs or pests in the tree," he explained.
Even though the bugs are harmless, he says if the tree has that certificate it will minimize the chances of bringing those critters into your home.
"If it's been sprayed for that, you probably won't have a problem with that," Park said. But say you go to a tree lot or farm and they don't have one of these certificates but you still want to buy the tree.
While it's not highly recommended, the two places you'll want to check for insects are the top of the tree and the trunk.
"If you get trees from my lot, you won't have to be too careful," Park said. "The last thing you want is a holiday with loads of bugs."
