A Los Lunas police officer is under investigation after an early morning shooting incident.

Los Lunas police officers responded to 431 Big Sky Drive in reference to a disturbance.

Officer Delinda Chavez, 46, is accused of firing a weapon inside her home and later at responding Los Lunas police officers.

The incident occured at apporiximately 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to State Police, Chavez had a get together at her residence Friday evening, and sometime around 1:30 Chavez, who was intoxicated, retrieved a handgun and began waving it at two women. Chavez was disarmed by one of the women. Chaves then barricaded herself inside her walk-in closet. The women called police.

Law enforcement authorities evacuated people living in the area because a deadly weapon was involved, according to Lt. Nathan Gurule.

Since a Los Lunas Police officer was involved in the incident, Los Lunas police turned over the case to New Mexico State Police, who - after a short negotiation - were able to get Chavez to exit her home.

State Police then placed Chavez under arrest and was booked into the Valencia County Detention Center. She faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of negligent use of a deadly weapon.

No one was hurt during the incident.

The criminal investigation is being handled by State Police and the Los Lunas Police Department is handling an administrative investigation.

Chavez has been placed on administrative leave until further notice. Gurule said Chavez has been with the department for about three years.
