City council to consider park renaming

He was a legendary boxer, but also someone with serious drug addictions.

Despite Johnny Tapia's troubled past, an Albuquerque city councilor wants to rename a city community center after the late boxer.

Councilor Ken Sanchez is sponsoring a proposal that would rename Wells Community Center near downtown Albuquerque after Johnny Tapia. Tapia grew up and trained as a boxer in that neighborhood.

City councilors are expected to consider the proposal at its regularly scheduled council meeting Monday night.

Sanchez said he'll likely defer the vote on the proposal for another two weeks.
