Selfless teens sew up quilts for families in need

Two Albuquerque teens are hoping to make a big donation in just a couple of weeks. They're busy sewing up quilts for Project Linus - and they are this weeks' Hometown Heroes.
"They're 15 years old. I cannot imagine being as selfless as they are at 15," said Debi Cline.
She teaches DECA at Highland High School. Her students; Stefani Madera and Elizabeth Gallegos; are sophomores at the school.
They're making quilts for Project Linus as part of a class project.
They chose community service. "Project Linus is an organization where people make quilts and homemade gifts for kids or families in need, or that are ill," said Stefani. Elizabeth added, "Or when there's fires."
They set a lofty goal: 100 quilts by Christmas even though they had never made one before. But they learned fast.
Cline taught them to use the sewing machine and off they went.
"At first it was hard, but now we're getting used to it and we're learning how to use it more," Elizabeth said.
It's a team effort too. The girls say they've gotten some help from classmates and their teacher.
"It makes us happy to know that we can help. We've all been in a situation where someone, you just needed someone to be there. Making quilts for people and kids that are sick and stuff makes us happy because even though we may not be there in person, we're there by heart and stuff," Stefani said.
Cline added that she's not surprised by the girls' effort. "(They're) Very, very kind young women, super compassionate, not worried about themselves but really wanting to make a difference in the community and in the world."
