DEMING, N.M. (AP) - A Luna County Sheriff's Office reserve deputy is recovering after authorities say he shot himself.

The Deming Headlight reports that Deming police say officers found 28-year-old Victor Ramirez lying in his driveway shortly on Saturday after he shot himself in the chest above his heart.

Authorities say he was airlifted to El Paso and is listed in stable condition. The shooting is still under investigation, but Deming Chief Michael Carillo says the .40-caliber handgun apparently used in the shooting was found inside Ramirez' truck.

Ramirez was found lying outside of his truck. Ramirez is a member of the Luna County Sheriff's Office Reserves, a volunteer force that helps with traffic control and transporting prisoners, among other duties.
