New Mexico State Police say a Hobbs man was killed early Tuesday when his semi-tractor truck crashed south of Lovington.

Police say David Tyler, 48, died in the crash.

The accident happened at 2:47 a.m. on U.S. Highway 285, near milepost 11, about 10 miles south of Loving.

Tyler was driving a 2012 Peterbuilt semi-truck and trailer south on US 285.

As he traveled south,  he crossed the northbound lanes of traffic and drove off the east side of the road.

Once off the road, the semi-truck drove down a dirt embankment. During this time the load within the tanker started to shift, causing the semi-truck to overturn.

After rolling over,  the semi-truck became engulfed as a result of the collision.

Tyler was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the cause of the crash was driver inattention and possibly driver fatigue.

Neither seatbelts nor alcohol were a contributing factor in the crash, they said.
