LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - The police chief in Los Alamos is taking an extended medical leave.

The Los Alamos Monitor reports that Los Alamos County Police Chief Wayne Torpy recently notified his staff that he will be out on an extended medical leave but did not give details of his condition.

He also told staff he didn't have specific timeline on returning.

The 54-year-old Torpy has led the department since 2005 after having served as deputy chief of the Melbourne Police Department in Florida. Deputy Police Chief Randy Foster will serve as acting chief.
