Local schools look for more funding

For three long years in the great recession, higher education budgets took a hit in New Mexico. About 90 million dollars per year. A total of over 250 million.
Now, university and college presidents are asking the Legislative Finance Committee for some modest increases to go along with a new performance-based budgeting system.
"The most pressing problems that the institutions themselves are talking about are the need for compensation of salaries. In other cases, they're also talking about the need for devoted maintenance of buildings," Dr. José Z. Garcia, cabinet secretary said.
"We have a woefully underpaid faculty and staff. We're losing faculty to other states some very key staff we're losing to other states. So we pleaded with the committee," Dr. Dan Lopez of New Mexico Tech said.
Lawmakers can't put it all back to a pre-recession level; they have about 200 million dollars to spend. But everybody from public schools to prisons want more money, not just higher education.
