APS readying for snow days as wintry blast nears

A storm could bring snow to the Metro area this weekend. And that means the Albuquerque Public School District will decide whether to issue a snow day.
The snowfall of December 5th, 2011 was enough to force schools to close.
"That was our one snow cancellation day that we had and looking at the weather today doesn't look like it's anywhere close to happening," said Brad Winter, the district's chief operating officer.
The district's snow plows have not been used yet, but the district is on alert. It's “snow watch” program is now in effect.
"Our district is 1,200 square miles. And every time we go into snow watch mode we pretty much traverse each side of the district," said Winter.
Much of the priority for the district falls on its three East Mountains schools.
"San Antonito, A. Montoya and Roosevelt,” said John Dufay, the district's maintenance and operations manager. “So what we do over there immediately is at the 4:30 timeslot we start to dispatch our crews out and they go out and do snow plows."
The district issues two-hour delays before 5:30 a.m. Cancellations are called before 7:30 a.m.
The district will call parents, announce changes through local media, its Facebook and Twitter pages.
The district is urging parents to update their contact information.
There are four make up days this school year: Two before Memorial Day and two after.
