First Judicial District Court Judge Barbara  Vigil was sworn in Friday as a New Mexico Supreme Court Justice.

Vigil was elected by voters during the November general election to fill the seat previously held by Justice Patricio Serna, who retired earlier this year.

Prior to her appointment on the high court, Vigil served as a judge, and then chief judge, on the First Judicial District Court, which is comprised of Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties.

Vigil has served on the District Court bench for over 12 years and has presided over thousands of court cases in the areas of complex civil litigation, family and domestic relations matters, child abuse and neglect cases, juvenile delinquency cases, criminal proceedings and appeals of administrative decisions, according to a press release.
