ARTESIA, N.M. (AP) - Navajo Refinery is planning to hire more than 1,000 temporary workers next month to help with maintenance at the southern New Mexico plant.

The Carlsbad Current Argus reports that the workers could be employed at the refinery anywhere from a month to six weeks.

The executive director of the Artesia Chamber of Commerce, Hayley Klein, says the development promises a great start to 2013 for the area's hotels and businesses.

Klein says hotels throughout the area will likely be affected since Artesia doesn't have the lodging capacity to house the hundreds of new workers.

Navajo Refinery officials are planning a reception Tuesday to talk with community members about what they can expect as a result of the worker influx.

The refinery processes a variety of crude oils from southwestern New Mexico and West Texas.
