Cops for Kids helps those in need

Some people living in northeast Albuquerque figured something bad was happening Sunday; sirens were wailing, there was a helicopter overhead and police and deputies were everywhere. It turns out what seemed really bad was actually really good.
"I think every cop car in Bernalillo county is outside," shopper Tiffany Dowell said.
Inside, metro area cops and deputies shopping along with McGruff the Crime Dog shopping at Wal-Mart not for themselves, but with children who might not otherwise get much for Christmas.
"Each officer has a child assigned to them and they get a $100 dollars gift card," Chief Ray Schultz said.
It's the 18th annual Cops for Kids, which explains what all the noise was about before everyone went shopping.
"One of the highlights of the day is motorcade - 100 police cars and motorcycles all in line," Schultz said.
The shopping wasn't just for toys. The children tried on new boots and clothing.
The Wal-Mart was packed, but none of the other shoppers seemed to mind - even one woman who told KOB Eyewitness News 4 it was hard to find a parking spot.
"I think it's fantastic," Dowell said. "I think it's great to get them what they need for Christmas but also to have a day with police officers. I think it's great."
