Those who managed to head out of Santa Fe and escape the mess enjoyed their own snow day by hitting the slopes and leaving any winter worries behind.

"I looked at my dog, my dog looked at me, and she said we better get up there, so we came up here," David Griscom, with his dog Raven, said.

With no lines for the chair lifts, since Ski Santa Fe officially opens Saturday, a handful of people decided to hike up the mountain and ski down.

"You really can't beat it, it's awesome," Joe Dean said.

With a few days to prepare before the weekend rush, Ben Abruzzo, whose family owns Ski Santa Fe, said the snow fell just in time.

"We're a little behind where we normally are, about a week or so, but we're just happy it snowed and excited to get the season going," he said.

Ski Santa Fe opens at 9 a.m. Saturday, with limited runs and discounted lift tickets.
