Cold weather brings ideal conditions for Ski Apache

Ski Apache plans to reopen December 14, helped by a dose of snow and some cold temperatures this weekend.

"They've made some pretty big piles to cover everything so we get that 18 inch depth across the ski runs that we need," Ski Apache Director of Operations Justin Rowland said.

Because of the warm weather they've had this year, Ski Apache has had to postpone its opening date twice already, first from Thanksgiving to December 7 and then from December 7 to December 14. But they've used the extra time to work on new lifts and new gondolas, which they say will make a better experience for visitors.

Snowboarder Sam Salmaniego said it's been a rough winter without enough snow.

"It's an upsetting winter. First of all, with the fire that happened up there, it took out half the mountain which delayed things because they had to put in new lifts and are putting in the gondola lift and everything, but just no snow, it's been killing us," Salmaniego said. "Normally it's Thanksgiving we're open but we're still not open right now. We're keeping our fingers crossed for Friday open."

That's why the three inches of snow that fell on the mountain and six that fell in town were so welcome.

"I was super excited, it started snowing about 6:30 and it was great snow that was falling," Salmaniego said. "It was great, great wet snow which is what we all look forward to so when it came down I was like hey, Friday I'm gonna go up if they're open! Fingers crossed."

Ski Apache updates its website regularly with information about the amount of snow they have and will confirm their opening date there as well. You can visit it at the link below:
