QUESTA, N.M. (AP) - Members of a northern New Mexico school board plagued by fist fights, chaotic meetings and forced police presence are defending themselves after getting suspended.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that members of the Questa Independent School District took their infighting to a state hearing Monday and challenged their suspension.

State Education Secretary-designate Hanna Skandera suspended the entire board in September after the PED conducted an investigation into allegations of intimidating school employees, physical altercations with fellow board members and violating the Open Meetings Act.

The hearing over the suspension was originally scheduled for last month but was postponed when attorneys representing the school board backed out just days before the hearing.

But Board member Daryl Ortega called the Monday hearing a "dog and pony show."
