CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - Work on a veterans' cemetery in Carlsbad has halted and officials don't know why.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that local National Guard unit was ordered last week to stop work on the proposed site but exactly who issued the order is unclear.

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway says a representative from the National Guard here notified the planning committee about the order to halt work.

In November, the Carlsbad National Guard unit volunteered its services and began clearing and leveling the ground for the cemetery that will be solely dedicated to veterans.

The committee and city leaders say the cemetery will be built to federal standards.
