Changes could be coming to the Albuquerque Public Schools calendar.

The meeting where the proposed changes were discussed was held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the APS headquarters building.

"The school calendar is one of the trickiest, most complex issues we take on all year," APS Spokeswoman Monica Armenta said.

The biggest changes include adding a second day for fall break and pushing back spring break by a month.

"The biggest challenge really is balancing what parents and students want with what we have to have in place by state statute," Armenta said. "You have to accommodate all sorts of things like negotiated agreements, holidays and state testing."

For years, March has been the month where APS families have planned vacations.

But for the 2013-2014 school year, if the committee approves this change, traveling will be pushed back to the week before Easter, in April.

"Moving spring break back a month will allow us to handle all the state mandatory testing without an issue," Armenta said.

APS students would also have a second day off during fall break, but that technically does not mean it is another day off from school overall.

"No matter how you configure the calendar, you still have 180 school days because the state mandates the number of days kids have to be in school," Armenta said.

The proposed calendar also includes a couple built-in snow days.

A final vote will be made December 19.
