Santa Fe owner wants pit bulls in Chihuahua attack saved

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A lawyer for a Santa Fe man who owns two American pit bull terriers accused of killing a Chihuahua and attacking the small dog's owner has told a judge he doesn't want them back but hopes they can be sent to a rehabilitation center.
Attorney Tom Clark told a municipal court judge Wednesday that 23-year-old Gerard Matthews believes his dogs are a liability he can't afford.
The judge is considering whether to order the pit bulls euthanized. Matthews also faces misdemeanor charges of keeping vicious animals and letting them run at large.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports Matthews' dogs jumped a fence and attacked the Chihuahua on Nov. 12 and bit the small dog's owner several times. Victim Anne Stills attended the hearing and called the dogs vicious.
