New Mexico State Police say pop star Justin Bieber was the target of a castration and murder plot hatched by a New Mexico man serving life in prison for murder.

On Thursday, State Police released an affidavit for arrest warrant that details the extensive and grisly plot against four people on the East Coast.

The plan - allegedly devised by convicted murderer Dana Martin from his prison cell in Las Cruces - called for the men to castrate the victims with a rose-pruning shears and then strangle them with a paisley tie.

The affidavit does not identify the people by name - but State Police confirmed to KOB that the person identified as "Victim 3" is Bieber.

The document says Martin convinced two New Mexico men, Mark Staake and Tanner Ruane, to participate in killing Bieber and three others.

Martin, who is currently serving two life sentences for raping and killing a 15-year-old girl in Vermont in 2000, met Staake in prison. Staake later enlisted his nephew Ruane in the plot, police say.

Staake and Ruane were arrested by New York State Police last month and accused of going to Vermont to kill two people. That plot unraveled when they got lost and ended up at the Canadian border.

Now police are revealing that the men's plans were much more extensive and included castrating and murdering Bieber in New York.

According to the affidavit released Thursday, the men were found with a pruning shears in their car when they were arrested after mistakenly entering Canada.

The affidavit alleges that Martin wanted Bieber dead because he was "infatuated" with him and had a large tattoo of Bieber on his leg. The document says Martin had "attempted to solicit correspondence on numerous occasions" with Bieber and he "never responded in kind."

"This perceived slight made Mr. Martin upset and that, coupled with Mr. Martin's perception of being a 'nobody' in prison, led him to begin plotting the kidnap and murder of Victim 3. In the end, what Mr. Martin stated he was seeking is a measure of notoriety so that there would be people outside of prison who would know who he (Mr. Martin) was."
