TAOS, N.M. (AP) - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will be in New Mexico for a public meeting regarding the future of hundreds of square miles of federal land north of Taos.

Salazar says he will be looking for the best path forward to preserve and protect the Rio Grande del Norte area.

The meeting will be at the Kachina Lodge in Taos on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The area contains stretches of the Rio Grande Gorge and Ute Mountain. The Bureau of Land Management currently oversees more than 240,000 acres in the area.

Members of New Mexico's congressional delegation have suggested that the area be designated as a national monument.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., says his office has been working since 2007 to protect the area. He calls it one of northern New Mexico's crown jewels.
