Local parents react to Connecticut shooting

Anytime there is a mass shooting, whether it has been at a movie theater or a school, it raises the question of gun control.
Fortunately, Albuquerque Public School officials said, there has never been a school shooting in our community.
But when it comes to getting a gun in New Mexico, with the exception of being a convicted felon, generally anyone can own one.
This has some parents on edge thinking you may not know who has what until it is too late.
"I was scared because I have my own 6-year-old who's in first grade, so I can't imagine what those parents are going through," Collette Lara said.
Like other parents, when Lara drops her son off at school she expects he will be safe and away from any weapons.
"They have the main entrance and then the other doors stay locked all day. The only way to get in is through the office and I mean that makes me feel better," Lara said.
Guns are strictly prohibited from school grounds. Teachers also are not armed. But some parents said it's hard to think what the answer is.
"What can you say that would argue that more gun control wouldn't be helpful in a situation like this," Griffin Arellano, whose mother is a teacher, said.
"I definitely think some things need to be changed, maybe metal detectors or something around those measures," Mike Garcia, who has a 2-year-old daughter, said.
Lara said extra precautions should be considered to help deter such a senseless tragedy.
"I can't believe that anyone would do that, I don't want to think that anyone else would want to do that," Lara said.
Getting caught with a firearm on or near school grounds is a felony.
