Cibola fires Chavez

On Tuesday morning, Cibola High School fired head football coach Judge Chavez after seven years in charge. The Cougars were 1-and-9 last season. Chavez has been a fixture in the high school coaching community, spending 34 years coaching in Albuquerque, the last 18 as a head coach.
Cibola athletic director Gene Victor said the school was looking for a change. "He's been a fixture here for a long time and he's put his heart and soul into this football program and it was a very difficult decision," said Victor.
Many of his coaching peers were surprised by the firing. "It's really a sad thing because he's been more than a coach," explained Valley boys basketball coach Joe Coleman. "He's earned the right to exit on his own because he's such a great person and so many people have benefitted by his leadership. I will miss having him around being able to watch what he does with young people."
The school hopes to name a replacement by February 1.
