Delaware police say New Mexico resident and journalistic icon Sam Donaldson was arrested for alleged DWI earlier this month.

Donaldson, the former unofficial "dean of the White House press corps" during the Reagan era and beyond, was arrested on Dec. 1 after being pulled over for a traffic violation in Lewes, Del.

According to a report from the police, a brief investigation revealed that Donaldson had been drinking alcohol.

He was given the standard field sobriety tests and was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence.

Donaldson was then released to an adult, pending a court appearance.

Donaldson grew up near Roswell, where he still owns a large ranch.

In the 1970's, '80s and 90's, Donaldson was ABC News' chief White House correspondent.

He was also the co-host of ABC's Sunday news program "This Week" and the investigative program "Primetime Live."
