It was a victory on Capitol Hill for one New Mexico lawmaker.

A bill backed by New Mexico's U.S. Sen. Tom Udall has passed the Senate.

The measure calls for registry to track the health problems of veterans affected by burn pits. It would also update veterans on potential treatments.

The proposal now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Udall started working on it after meeting Master Sgt. Jessey Baca.

Baca is currently battling cancer and several other health problems believed to have been caused by exposure to burn pits in Iraq.
