State Police name Hobbs man killed in rollover Monday

State Police say a Hobbs man was killed Monday in a semi-tractor trailer crash on Shugart Road, south of US Highway 82, approximately 25 miles east of Carlsbad. The dead man is the truck's driver, Guadalupe Ontiveros, 27, of Hobbs. According to police, Ontiveros was driving south on Shugart when he drove off the west side of the road. Once off the roadway, he attempted to regain control of the semi by steering to the left. As the semi was re-entering the roadway, the water in the tanker started to shift. This caused the semi-tractor and trailer to overturn, coming to rest off the east side of the roadway. As the semi turned, Ontiveros was ejected. Ontiveros was pronounced dead at the scene by an Investigator from the Office of the Medical Investigator. The contributing factors in this crash have been identified as driver inattention, excessive speed and failure to utilize safety restraints. Alcohol was not a contributing factor.
