New Mexico's long-troubled unemployment insurance system is getting a major makeover - but it's going to mean a weeklong shutdown of the entire claim-filing process.

The system for both people making unemployment claims and employers making payments will be down from New Year Day through Saturday, Jan. 5.

The new system will launch Sunday, Jan. 6. That means all claims must be filed by 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, or you'll have to wait a week to get those benefits.

"Individuals absolutely control their destiny when it comes to getting their certification in timely, as long as they do so by December 31st at close of business they will not experience a delay," said Celine Bussey, Secretary of the state's Workforce Solutions Department.

State officials said it will be the first fully integrated tax and claims system in the county. The whole thing will basically be online - no more logjams in the phone system of waiting for the mailman so you can conduct routine business.

The state has links where you can learn more than you ever wanted to know about the new system.
