Albuquerque launches voluntary gun disposal program

In the wake of the Connecticut school shootings every city in the nation is talking about gun control.
Hundred of mayors around the country have signed a petition to the president asking for tighter laws.
And now the city of Albuquerque is launching a volunteer gun disposal program aimed to keep the community safer.
Every Saturday in January the Albuquerque Police Department will be accepting firearms and ammunition from anyone throughout the state who want to dispose of them.
Guns will also be accepted every second Saturday of each month after January.
People can either drop off firearms and ammunition at the Metropolitan Forensic Science Center at 5350 2nd St. NW, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the designated disposal dates or they can call (505) 235-3159 to make arrangements for in-town pickup or drop off.
Firearms and ammunition will be accepted without question. All firearms will be checked to see if they are stolen. Any firearm with a significant historical value will be preserved and all other firearms will be destroyed.
