LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Dona Ana County animal control officers and fire officials rescued a Christmas puppy who ended up at the bottom of an abandoned well.

Officials say the puppy's owner, who had gotten the animal as a gift for her children, hadn't even had the animal long enough to give it a name when it ended up in the bottom of the 12-foot well in her yard Wednesday afternoon. She told officials she knew about the well opening, and had barricaded the hole to prevent the puppy from falling inside.

But animal control officer Sunne Lucero says the puppy's curiosity got the best of her.

Las Cruces firefighters brought in a remote-control camera that was dropped down to monitor the animal while officials worked four hours to fit a PVC pipe with rope to pull the puppy to safety.

Lucero says the puppy appeared unharmed.
