Ben Lujan laid to rest

Ben Lujan will always be remembered in New Mexico for his influence and years in politics. But family members and friends Saturday remembered him as a giving man and a good husband.
Funeral services were held at The Basilica Cathedral of St. Francis in Santa Fe Saturday morning. Lujan was then buried in Nambe, just north of the capitol. Hundreds of people paid their respects at both services.
Lujan spent 38 years in the House of Representatives and spent the last 12 years as Speaker of the House before he died of lung cancer. But his sister-in-law remembered him more as a great husband to her sister.
"He treated my sister, I mean she had it made with him, he was so good to her. And he was very good to us," Lucy Garcia said.
She recalled a time when she needed help and Lujan was there for her.
"If he knew that someone needed his help, he was there. And I know that I've had health problems, and he would find medication, and if he thought I could use it, he'd buy it," she said.
And one of his former classmates said Lujan's good nature came at a young age.
"Aggressive person, and he was very nice. Ever since he was a little boy, very aggressive, always trying to help people out," Ben Montoya said.
With the new legislation session starting in January, chances are Ken Martinez from Grants will become the new Speaker of the House.
