An Albuquerque family will get to be together as their 2-year-old daughter undergoes open heart surgery.

Officer Luis Hernandez was dispatched to the Northeast Heights when someone called about a family standing out in the frigid cold with their 2-year-old asking for money.

Hernandez says he started talking to them...and found out they were trying to raise money to get the father to Denver for the girl's surgery.

"I just asked them to step in the back of my car so I could get them out of the cold," Hernandez said. "I went on the internet to research, made a couple calls, Googled a bunch of things, and nothing really made sense.

Hernandez wound up buying the father a bus ticket to Denver to be with his family for his daughter's surgery.

All Hernandez asks for in exchange for the bus ride is that the family call him after the surgery to let him know how it went.

The family travels to Denver on Wednesday.
