An elderly pedestrian who was legally blind and deaf was killed Monday in an accident near UNM.

Police say Loretta Wagy, 71, was killed after being hit by a car that was backing out of a driveway at 1405 Wellesley NE at 9:19 a.m.

According to police, Wagy lived in the area and walked the neighborhood on a daily basis - nearly eight miles daily.

Wagy was considered legally blind and deaf and used a small baby stroller (rather than a walker) to assist her in walking.

It is believed she habitually walked on the street near the curb to avoid the ups and downs of driveways that would hamper her in walking.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.
