Animal Protection of New Mexico is offering a $3,500 award for tips leading to an arrest in a Southeast New Mexico animal cruelty case.

On December 18, the New Mexico Livestock Board responded to a call from two boys riding four-wheelers southeast of Hagerman who found an injured horse.

They discovered a bay mare with dried blood on both sides of her neck, and realized that a bullet had shot completely through.

“The vets called it a million dollar shot just because it was right above the spinal cord and below the esophagus,” Eric Martinez said.

Officials posted a “lost and found” notice in the Roswell Daily Record, but no owner has come forward. The horse has recovered and will be put up for auction.

If you have any information regarding the case, call the New Mexico Attorney General’s Animal Cruelty Hot Line at 977-5HUMANE.
