FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Bloomfield closed its motor vehicle department after officials in the northern New Mexico city were told money is missing due to suspected embezzlement.

The Farmington Times reports that more than $20,000 apparently was stolen by an employee.

Police say an employee apparently was skimming money that was supposed to be deposited in a city bank account.

No one has been charged but one employee has been placed on unpaid administrative leave while police investigate. Five others are on paid administrative leave.

Mayor Scott Eckstein says the city will ask the state auditor to investigate to determine exactly how much money is missing from the department.

It isn't known how soon the city department will reopen, but Eckstein says it'll be as soon as possible.
