Saturday was the first day for the city of Albuquerque's gun disposal program and officers said there was a big turn out.

Officers collected 45 weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition

They say people have turned in everything from pocket revolvers to assault-type weapons and even gun powder.

The program is designed to help gun owners who don't want their guns any more, but don't know how to get rid of them

Gun owners can turn them in no questions asked.

Police said once the weapon is turned in, they run the serial number, and if the weapon comes back as stolen police will contact the owner to see if they want the gun back.

All guns left with the crime lab will be destroyed.

The gun disposal program will go on every Saturday in Jan. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Crime Lab.
