LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) - Mora County officials say they'll be taking a different approach as they try again to get state funding to resume work on the county's vacant and uncompleted courthouse complex.
The Las Vegas Optic reports that the complex remains a vacant shell because the county has been unable to secure funding to finish it.
The county unsuccessfully sought $4 million from the Legislature last year to complete the courthouse's first floor.
County officials say they'll ask the Legislature for $2.2 million while seeking a $1.6 million loan from the New Mexico Finance Authority and possibly resorting to a local tax increase.
The building's shell was completed with a combination of local, state and federal funding. Finishing the second floor would cost an estimated $2.8 million.
