Three people are dead and only one lane of I-40 is open each way between Laguna and Grants after a crash Wednesday involving two semi tractor trucks.

New Mexico State Police Lt. Robert McDonald says an eastbound tractor-trailer rig crossed the median and collided head-on with a westbound rental truck Wednesday morning.

McDonald says all three people in the rental truck were killed and that the big rig's driver and a passenger were injured.

We are working to get more information about the crash, including the names of the victims.

Small vehicles are being diverted at the McCarty's exit and at the Stuckey's exit onto NM 124.

But semi traffic won't be allowed from NM 124 because of height restrictions.

Police ask drivers to use caution when driving in the area.
