Almost a year after a Santa Fe man was murdered, police know for sure who killed him.

Ethan Boyer was shot to death in his home last February when he walked in on an intruder.

An unusual piece of evidence has provided not only closure for Santa Fe police but also for the community to be able to finally understand a little more about what took place in Boyer's murder.

Boyer's case is now closed, after police said DNA evidence points to a suspect who was killed days later.

A photograph of David Martinez pointed to a key piece of evidence connecting him to Boyer's death.

Police explained the sunglasses Martinez was wearing in the photograph matched a lens found at the murder scene in Boyer's home.  This connection was confirmed through DNA.

Officers found Martinez shot and killed days later.  Police arrested Martinez’s brother, Felix, and another man, Sam Leyba, for his murder.

Martinez’s murder scene proved a direct link back to Boyer's killer.

"The weapon that was found laying on top of Mr. Martinez is not only the weapon that killed Mr. Martinez but the ballistics testing is conclusive that that is the same firearm that was used to murder Ethan Boyer," Cpt. Aric Wheeler, Santa Fe Police Department, said.

Both Leyba and Felix are currently serving time in jail for their admitted involvement in the murder of David Martinez.

Boyer's case is considered closed since the primary suspect is dead.
