Human bones have been found in a field in the South Valley.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's Deputies said they were called out to the 5000 block of Broadway.

Investigators are working to determine how the bones ended up there and whether a crime has been committed.

Deputies said someone was walking through the field Wednesday around noon and found a bone sticking out of the dirt.

Investigators arrived and combed through the field looking for any more remains.

Deputy Aaron Williamson said they found a partial skeleton buried in the dirt. Deputies are waiting on the Office of the Medical Investigator to determine the age, gender and cause of death of the remains.

"We're going to treat it as suspicious just because of the condition that the bones were found, partially buried," Deputy Williamson said Thursday. "That doesn't necessarily mean that it is suspicious. It could be ancient bones. We're still in the early stages of a very lengthy investigation."
