School was out all day Tuesday for students at Queen of Heaven Catholic School in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights.
That’s because the school at 5303 Phoenix NE suffered a water main break overnight, sending water spurting out of the blacktop. The water later froze into sheets of ice in the school’s parking lot.
School officials immediately cancelled classes when they discovered the break. Queen of Heaven Principal Gina Guitard told KOB that they are required by law to do so.
“If they can't use the bathroom, if they can't wash their hands, then they can't come. And that’s the same for private and public schools. No water, no school.”
Crews are now hacking up all the concrete in the parking lot in order to fix the problem. They hope to finish by the end of the say, but if they don’t, class could be cancelled Wednesday, too.
Because this is a private school, city crews are not being used to clean up.
UPDATE: KOB Eyewitness News 4 was told late this afternoon that classes will go on as scheduled Wednesday at the school.
