It doesn't take much to feel those bone-chilling temperatures as soon as you step outside.

People may not like it but those who sell firewood say cold snaps mean big business this time of year.

"Non-stop, we're very busy," Dennis Romero, owner of A-1 Firewood, said.

When the temperatures drop, Romero said, his workers are busier than ever, and this week they are working overtime.

Tuesday, employees spent the day packing up truckloads of firewood orders for people across the metro area, something Romero has been doing for nearly three decades.

When purchasing firewood, you should make sure there is no sap seeping out of the log, which would indicate the log is too fresh to burn.

Ideal logs for burning are seasoned for about 9 months to a year, indicated by how brittle and dry it is.

"We're bringing in wood right now for next season so that it'll be dry this time next year," Romero said.

Customers start stocking up as early as July, and typically buy through March, Romero said.

"We sell three to four thousand cords a year," Romero said.

Priced around 200 dollars a cord, that could mean at least anywhere from $600,000 to $800,000 a year.

The snow may have stopped falling for now, but Romero said as long as it's cold, there won't be any extra logs lying around.

"Because of this arctic air it's been really, really busy," Romero said.

Depending on how often you plan on using your fireplace, a cord of wood can typically last all season.

We checked with some other firewood businesses to do some price comparisons, and found a cord of wood that is delivered directly to a residence typically goes for anywhere from $200 to $300.
