ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico State basketball player has been arrested in connection with a car accident that killed an Alamogordo man.

Authorities say 19-year-old Emery D. Coleman II was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of one count of third-degree felony homicide by vehicle.

The Alamogordo Daily News reports Coleman was released on his own recognizance on a $5,000 unsecured bond pending a Jan. 30 court hearing.

The newspaper says Coleman declined comment on his arrest. It's unclear if he has a lawyer. Alamogordo Department of Public Safety detective Dusty L. Collins says investigators determined Coleman was using his cellphone to send a text message at the time of the Jan. 5 accident.

Authorities say the driver of the other car - 85-year-old Clarence G. Boulanger - died at a hospital.
