LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces police say an officer shot and wounded a man who reportedly threatened the officer with a knife and refused to drop it.

Police Chief Richard Williams says the officer was responding to a trespassing call in an upscale neighborhood Wednesday when he encountered the man.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the man was hospitalized in stable condition with injuries that police said weren't life-threatening. The 23-year-old man's identity hasn't been released.
