Bomb threats land former NMSU student in prison

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A former New Mexico State University student has been sentenced to two years in prison for making false bomb threats.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says 30-year-old Daud Anwar will also be on supervised release for three years following his prison sentence. Anwar was read his punishment Thursday in federal court in Las Cruces.
On the morning of March 3, 2011, Anwar claimed there was a bomb on the NMSU campus and that there would be casualties if the campus wasn't evacuated. Federal prosecutors say he made six separate threats via telephone and the Internet.
He was arrested just over a year later and pleaded guilty in April 2012.
U.S. Attorney Ken Gonzales says in a post-9/11 world, each threat must be taken seriously and that false threats drain already overburdened public safety agencies.
