GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - The Diocese of Gallup has announced that Gallup Catholic High School will close at the end of the semester.

The Gallup Independent reports that Rev. James Walker, the interim superintendent of Catholic schools for the diocese, says the decision came down to insufficient enrollment.

Walker says only 33 high school students currently are enrolled when five years ago the school had 130 students.

The diocese's announcement comes on the heels of Gallup Catholic's Centennial Celebration that kicked off the school year.

Officials say the school's pre-kindergarten to eighth grade classes will remain open. But Walker says he did not know how many teacher and staff positions would be eliminated with the high school's closure.
